Professor Bruce Singh, inaugural Chair of the Board of the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, welcomed today’s statement from Minister O’Brien about the commencement of the Foundation.
“On behalf of the Foundation Board, I am very pleased to acknowledge the Foundation’s assumption of its legislated responsibilities for reducing the prevalence and harms of problem gambling and for promoting responsible gambling in Victoria”
Professor Singh continued, “Victorians legitimately have high expectations of the critical role to be played by the Foundation in addressing problem gambling within our community.”
“The Board is committed to delivering on these expectations by driving the development and implementation of prevention, communication and education strategies, by managing the delivery of effective counselling and treatment services, and by commissioning leading research to support its work in these areas.”
“The Board recognises that gambling is a legitimate recreational activity enjoyed by many Victorians and the Foundation will have an important role in helping those who choose to gamble, to do so responsibly.” Professor Singh said.
“In undertaking its new responsibilities, the Board also acknowledges Victoria’s strong record of leadership in this area and the work already undertaken by successive governments. The Foundation intends to build on this legacy by guiding the development of innovative and effective programs and initiatives for the prevention, harm minimisation and the treatment of problem gambling.”
“The Board looks forward to engaging with stakeholders across the sector over the coming months, to identify, develop and refine our key strategic priorities for action over the short, medium and longer terms.”
