Australian Racing Fact Book 2016–2017 edition published

Racing Australia recently published the latest edition of the Australian Racing Fact Book. A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2016–2017 outlines the key results and statistics from the Australian thoroughbred sector. The fact book includes wagering turnover on thoroughbred racing, greyhound racing, harness racing and sports betting.

Key findings include:

Australia

  • total wagering turnover in Australia was $32.598 billion (an increase of $3.714 billion or 13 per cent from 2015–2016). More than 40 per cent of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers
  • total thoroughbred wagering turnover in Australia was $18.063 billion (an increase of $2.345 billion or 15 per cent from 2015–2016). More than a third of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers
  • total sports betting turnover in Australia was $9.667 billion (an increase of $1.424 billion or 17 per cent from 2015–2016). Nearly three-quarters of this amount was bet with Northern Territory bookmakers.

Victoria

  • total thoroughbred wagering turnover in Victoria was $2.840 billion (an increase of $41 million or 1 per cent from 2015–2016)
  • total greyhound racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $900.07 million (an increase of $37 million or 4 per cent from 2015–2016)
  • total harness racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $498.11 million (a decrease of $7 million or 1.5 per cent from 2015–2016)
  • total sports betting turnover in Victoria was $767.64 million (an increase of $12 million or 1.5 per cent from 2015–2016).
