Australian Racing Factbook 2015-16 edition published

Racing Australia recently published the latest edition of the Australian Racing Factbook. A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2015-16 outlines the key results and statistics from the Australian thoroughbred sector. The Factbook includes wagering turnover on thoroughbred racing, greyhound racing, harness racing and sports betting.

Key findings include:

  • total thoroughbred wagering turnover in Australia was $15.718 billion, with nearly one-third of this amount bet with Northern Territory bookmakers
  • total thoroughbred wagering turnover in Victoria was $2.799 billion, with most of this bet at TABs
  • total greyhound racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $862.87 million
  • total harness racing turnover in Victoria at TABs was $505.28 million
  • total sports betting turnover in Victoria was $755.74 million, with most of this bet at TABs
  • total sports betting turnover in Australia was $8.243 billion, with nearly two-thirds of this amount bet with Northern Territory bookmakers
  • total sports betting turnover in Australia has more than doubled in the last three years, increasing from $3.991 billion in 2012-13 to $8.243 billion in 2015-16. Total racing wagering turnover has decreased over the same period from $20.812 billion to $20.641 billion
  • sport betting now accounts for 29 per cent of wagering turnover in Australia, compared to 54 per cent for thoroughbred racing, 11 per cent for greyhound racing and 6 per cent for harness racing.
