On behalf of the Foundation Board, I am very pleased to acknowledge that from today, the Foundation assumes its legislated responsibilities for reducing the prevalence and harms of problem gambling and for promoting responsible gambling in Victoria.
Victorians legitimately have high expectations of the critical role to be played by the Foundation in addressing problem gambling within our community and we are committed to delivering on these expectations by:
- driving the development and implementation of prevention, communication and education strategies
- managing the delivery of effective counselling and treatment services, and
- commissioning leading research to support our work in these areas.
The Board recognises that gambling is a legitimate recreational activity enjoyed by many Victorians and the Foundation will have an important role in helping those who choose to gamble, to do so responsibly.
In undertaking its new responsibilities, the Board acknowledges Victoria’s strong record of leadership in this area and the work already undertaken by successive governments. The Foundation intends to build on this legacy by guiding the development of innovative and effective programs and initiatives for the prevention, harm minimisation and the treatment of problem gambling.
We look forward to engaging with stakeholders across the sector over the coming months, to identify, develop and refine our key strategic priorities for action over the short, medium and longer terms.
